AI Visibility for Plumbers

When a pipe bursts, does AI put your name in front of the homeowner?

A failing water heater or a flooded bathroom is not a problem anyone schedules. The homeowner grabs their phone, asks ChatGPT, Google AI, or Perplexity for a plumber right now, and the assistant returns one or two names. If yours is missing, the water keeps rising and the call goes to whoever it did name. Putting plumbing companies into that answer is the entire job we do.

What is AI visibility for a plumbing business?

AI visibility is whether the answer engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, and the others) put your plumbing company forward when a homeowner asks them for help. This is a separate contest from Google. You can own the local map pack for "plumber near me" and still go unmentioned the moment that homeowner instead asks an assistant "who can fix a burst pipe near me tonight." The assistant does not return ten blue links for them to sort through. It gives a short answer naming a couple of companies, and being one of those companies is the only thing we work on. SMPL is the AI Visibility Company, and plumbing is one of the trades we make sure the answer names.

Why AI leaves most plumbers out of the answer

Two features of this trade decide who the engine picks, and most shops are handing away both.

The clock is running on damage. A slab leak or an overflowing toilet gets worse by the minute, so the homeowner takes the first name that fits and dials it. There is no browsing, no comparison, no second look. If the engine does not surface you in that instant, the job and the water damage both belong to someone else.

Availability is the whole question. A large share of plumbing demand arrives after hours, on weekends, and on holidays, and the assistant only recommends what it can confirm. If your pages never state that you answer emergencies, that you run 24 hours, and the exact towns you cover, the engine cannot put you in a late-night answer even when you would have taken the call.

Underneath both sits the part no one tidied up. Your name, address, and phone read differently across Google, Yelp, Angi, and your own site, so the engine sees several businesses wearing your name and trusts none of them. Your planned work, repipes, water heater and tankless installs, sewer line replacement, is buried where the engine cannot separate it from a drain snake. The license and reviews that would vouch for you live where nothing ties them back to your listing. Straighten those inputs and the engine can finally answer with you. Leave them tangled and it keeps naming the plumber who fixed them.

We measured a trade just like this one, and most companies were invisible

This is not a guess about plumbing. We ran the first local-service vertical we benchmarked, pest control, and the result was stark. In June 2026 we put 32 pest control businesses in one Southwest Riverside County market through two leading answer engines, ChatGPT and Perplexity, asking the plain question a customer asks: who is the best in town. 81% pulled zero citations from either engine and 62% were never named at all. Plumbing is the same shape of business, local, urgent, and service-area bound, and the pattern holds: when the search becomes an AI question, most capable shops simply are not in the answer. (First-party benchmark. One vertical, one region, one moment in time.)

How we get your plumbing company into the answer

We do one thing and we carry it the whole way.

  1. We scan. We ask every major engine the calls that actually come in, emergency plumber near me, water heater replacement, main line backup, and we record where you land and which shop is catching those calls instead.
  2. We diagnose. The companies the engine keeps naming are not lucky. They answer the real questions on their own pages, they show proof the engine can check, and their business details line up everywhere it looks.
  3. We fix it on property you own. We reconcile the listings, sharpen the service pages, add the structure the engine reads, and make your emergency availability and your big installed work impossible to miss. In your words, nothing invented.
  4. We prove it. We re-scan every month and give you the movement in plain numbers, and we never promise a ranking no honest company can promise.

We have already moved an answer engine in another service trade

Beecasso is a bee removal company with two decades in business, and the AI engines were not naming it at all. We rebuilt the structure beneath its site and its listings, and within six weeks it went from cited by none of the engines to recommended by six of the seven in its strongest market. Bee removal is not plumbing, and that is exactly the point: the thing that moves an answer engine is the same across local service work, and here it is proven on a real company, not promised. Plumbing is where we are aiming it now.

What being the answer is worth to a plumbing business

Plumbing pairs constant small urgency with occasional large jobs, and the answer engine sits at the front of both. The two in the morning call about a leak is often the same customer who books the repipe or the tankless upgrade a month later, so a single AI answer can open a relationship worth many times the first invoice. We track what we generate with call and click tracking, so you see the jobs that came from being in the answer rather than a number you have to take on faith. We do not promise a specific placement, because the engines decide that and no honest company can. We show you the climb and what it brought through the door.
