The answer engines do not work the way Google does. They pull from a small set of sources they can read, trust, and reconcile, then they name one or two businesses. Most HVAC contractors lose on the inputs, not the work:

• Your business details do not match across the web. The name, address, and phone on your site, your Google profile, your Facebook, and the contractor directories disagree. The engines read that as several different businesses and trust none of them.
• Your site does not answer the question directly. The engines look for your services, your service area, the brands you handle, financing, emergency and after-hours availability, and pricing, stated plainly. If a homeowner has to call to find out what you do, an AI cannot recommend it either.
• The structure the engines read is missing. No schema, no clean business entity, thin or buried service pages. The engine cannot tell what you are or where you work.
• Your proof is not where the engines look. Reviews, licensing, and real credentials sit on pages the engine never reconciles back to you.

None of this is about being a good contractor. It is about whether the machine that now answers the question can actually see you.

In the first local-service vertical we scanned, pest control, we ran 32 businesses in one Southwest Riverside County market through two leading answer engines, ChatGPT and Perplexity, in June 2026. 81% got zero citations from any engine, and 62% were never named at all.
